Makinde Names Wolekanle Chief of Staff as Oyo Government Faces New Test of Coordination
By Akin Alade
IBADAN, Oyo State — Governor Seyi Makinde has appointed Bashorun Akinwale Akinwole, popularly known as Wolekanle, as the new Chief of Staff, placing a fresh responsibility on the experienced grassroots politician to strengthen coordination within the Oyo State Government following the resignation of Segun Ogunwuyi.
The appointment, announced on Monday, October 12, 2026, takes immediate effect and marks a significant change in one of the most influential administrative positions in the governor’s office. Akinwole previously served as chairman of the Oyo State Local Government Service Commission, a role that exposed him to local government administration and grassroots political structures.
New Chief of Staff Faces Immediate Governance Challenge
The appointment puts the spotlight on how the new Chief of Staff will coordinate government activities, facilitate communication between the governor and his appointees, and help translate policy decisions into practical results for residents.
As the governor’s principal administrative aide, the Chief of Staff occupies a strategic position in the daily operation of the executive office. The effectiveness of the new appointee will therefore be measured not merely by his political experience but also by his ability to promote efficiency, discipline and accountability across the administration.
Ogunwuyi’s Exit Brings Leadership Transition Into Focus
Akinwole’s appointment followed Ogunwuyi’s resignation, which took effect on October 12. In his resignation letter, Ogunwuyi expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and said he remained proud of the administration’s efforts to advance the development and prosperity of Oyo State.
Although the leadership change has attracted attention, no verified official explanation has established that the resignation resulted from a disagreement over the deputy governorship or any other political position. Such claims should therefore be treated cautiously unless supported by credible evidence.
The transition nevertheless raises questions about continuity within the governor’s inner circle and how the administration intends to maintain cohesion among its political and administrative leadership.
Aderonke Adedayo Gets Additional Responsibility
In a related appointment, Makinde named Mrs Aderonke Adedayo as Director-General of the state’s Due Process Office.
Adedayo, who serves as Special Adviser on General Intervention and Donor Agencies, will retain her existing position while taking on the additional responsibility of heading the office.
The appointment places renewed attention on public procurement processes, administrative compliance and the importance of ensuring that government expenditure follows established rules and procedures.
2027 Political Climate Adds Another Dimension
With the 2027 general elections approaching, appointments within the Oyo State Government are likely to attract political interest. However, the immediate significance of Akinwole’s emergence should be assessed against the responsibilities attached to his office rather than assumptions about future political calculations.
His grassroots political background could prove useful in maintaining communication with stakeholders across the state, but the real test will be whether that experience translates into better government coordination and more responsive public service.
For residents, the central issues remain familiar: infrastructure, employment opportunities, education, healthcare, security and efficient use of public resources.
Performance Will Define the New Appointment
The new Chief of Staff takes office at a time when effective coordination and clear communication are essential to the delivery of government programmes.
Makinde congratulated the appointees and urged them to discharge their responsibilities with loyalty, commitment and dedication to the service of Oyo State.
Ultimately, Akinwole’s success will depend on his capacity to work with other officials, support the governor’s policy priorities and help ensure that decisions taken within the Government House produce measurable benefits for the people.
For the Makinde administration, the latest appointment presents an opportunity to reinforce its administrative machinery. For the new Chief of Staff, it is a fresh test of leadership, political judgement and public service delivery.
